It's pretty hard to come up with just one activity that carries more benefits than gardening does. Many people already know this, but if you've never had your own garden, you may not know what you're missing. People seldom buy vegetables if they are too expensive, which can be bad for their diet. If you are growing your own, this is no longer a worry. In case a natural disaster does occur, if you have a garden, you can still get produce even if these areas are ravaged. Personal food supplies are often a lifesaver when situations arise that bring hardship. You will always have the comfort of knowing that food is available if you have a garden, even if the local grocery store does not get a delivery. Self-sufficiency is the end result of people that devote themselves to a garden.

Losing weight, getting healthy, and all of the usual things attributed to a healthy diet are part of the gardening process. If you are consistent about your gardening efforts, this physical fitness can become your reality. The reason the gardening works so well is that you have to use different muscles in a variety of ways to get your gardening done. You might, for example, have to dig in a standing or seated position, pull up weeds, push a wheelbarrow full of leaves or compost or even move some large rocks. Your physical fitness will greatly improve as you do all of these activities throughout the week. As an added bonus, you are getting a healthy dose of Vitamin D because you are in the sunlight.
